SCIENCE

Reviewed the water cycle and read about vanishing water.

After discussing the water cycle the kids made their own rain.  Filled a mason jar 2/3 full then placed some shaving cream on top of the water till it was a bit out of the jar.  The kids then picked what food coloring they wanted to mix in their little cup of water.

Condensation experiment: filled a jar with ice and waited about an hour to see the water droplets on the outside of the jar.  Picture (left side) doesn't show the condensation on the outside of the jar.   Evaporation experiment:  placed some water on a plate and marked it with a marker, then checked back every few days to check the level of water, by the 3rd day the water had evaporated a lot, by day five there was no water on the plate.

More water experiment to show evaporation, condensation, and precipitation.  Pour hot water into a mason jar and placed a plate with ice on top of the jar.

Evaporation experiment by observing the steam from boiling water.

This week we started learning all about Mercury, the planet closest to the sun.

Lesson this week has focused on the planet Mercury.

Made some sand cloud dough to represent the surface of Mercury, then the kids would drop rocks on the sand to observe how craters are made on the planet.

While I read more on Mercury the kids made their own version of Mercury with craters using  pencils and their fingers.

Cut out two circular pieces, one for the Moon and the other for Mercury.  The kids would hold up the Moon in front of the light to show what an eclipse would like with the Moon in front of the sun and an at an angle have Mercury in the background.  When the moon is between the sun and Earth, it can cause a solar eclipse but when Mercury it's in front of the sun doesn't because it is closer to the sun.

Learned about a trip across the sun, spacecraft to Mercury, who named Mercury and the Messenger: 10 years in Space.
