MFW: ECC & K4 WEEK 18
This week we will start our studies on Kenya Africa, learn about the grasslands and the animals and plants there. We'll observe and study grass up close and discuss it parts all the way to the roots. Start learning about measurements in oz, gal., kilo, and use a ruler. D will finish up with the letter Hh and start the letter Ee, work on the hexagon and triangle shape, and continue to review his numbers.
BOOK
Few books we used this week.
Some of the magazines we used this week to go with our study of the animals in the grasslands.
BIBLE
Learned about Mary Slessor a Pioneer Missionary to Calabar.
Studies the Parable of the Sower and of the Mustard Seed.
The kids colored in the worksheet of the mustard seed and then observed the size of a mustard seed.

LANGUAGE ARTS
Working on her spelling and language arts workbooks.
Reading her spelling words and a poem in the language art workbook.

MATH
For some reason we have seem to have lost our 100 chart, not sure where it could be at. The kids were quite surprised I couldn't find it since I always place it in the same area. So instead we counted our attendance chart and this week we got 100 days of school. Celebrated with enjoying a movie and lots of wonderful snacks as a family.
This week we started learning about measuring in oz, grams, kilograms, and gallons.

ARTS & CRAFT
Learned about decorative necklaces and made some out of paper plates.
After they completed their necklaces they quickly put it on and then of course they had to put it on Zeus.
GEOGRAPHY
Leaving to Kenya, Africa this week.
Adding their stickers to their passports.
Added Ghana and Kenya to our wall map.
Glued their plane tickets to their "Ticket Book".
Observed our Ghanian Barbie clothes and read some facts of where she's from.
Observing pictures in our Atlas book while I read some information about Kenya.
This was a great find at one of our local thrift stores, two goat horn vases from Senegal.

Letter we received from Madagascar and they were kind enough to send us money that equals $3.14 in American money.
Made some Kenyan recipe, even though the teacher's manual says to save it for next week but it went great with the rest of our dinner. Mashed potatoes, corn, and green peas with some Spanish seasoning to it. We all loved it and added some white rice and sausage to it.
Kids really loved learning about the "Everyday Kenyan Expressions" and trying them out. They kept telling their dad and my dad what words they learned.

Geography Game: Africa
While playing the Geography game on the floor Zeus wanted to join us of course. He always wants to be involved in everything we do. We were reviewing North America when he insisted on being part of the game.
SCIENCE
While I read about the grasslands and the many different things Africa has to offer the kids observed the pictures.
After searching in the Animal book the kids searched in their animal bin for some animals that would be in the grasslands of Africa.
Kids colored in their safari worksheets and Kenya worksheets.
After coloring and cutting out the animals in our "A trip around the world" workbook the kids glued their animals to popsicle sticks.

Kids built a truck taking the animals for a tour and then returning them to their homes.

Before Tropical Storm Michael got worst we went out in the morning and pulled some grass out to be able to observe all the parts of the grass.
Printed out a worksheet of the parts of a grass, can't remember what website I got it from, then we taped the parts of the grass on paper.

NATURE WALK
Before and after our nature class the kids enjoyed lots of fun in the woods with their friends. They just love being outdoors.
Digging in the dirt and climbing a fallen tree truck with friends at the park.
Before Tropical Storm Michael hit us we went for a short walk in our neighborhood to get some energy out of the kids. I say short since mid way through our walk it started raining hard. Kids enjoyed running in the rain and jumping in the puddles.
Video of a couple that set a lion cub free in the wild after teaching it to survive on its own and then return to check up on her in the wild.
Of course you can't study about the grasslands and Africa without watching the Disney movies "Lion King" and "Madagascar".

FIELD TRIP
Went to our Nature Class: Dinosaurs and Fossils with our co-op group.
Ranger Mike is an awesome ranger who really loves his job and has so much knowledge about so many different things. Make learning so much fun for kids and adults.
Once Ranger Mike finished his lessons he let the kids explore all the dinosaurs he had and look at the fossils from his own personal collection.
Our kids love dinosaurs and this was right up their alley.
Fun week starting our studies on Kenya, Africa. Learned about the grasslands, grass, animals, and plants there. Didn't realized that there were over 200 different types of grass. Observed some grass and all its parts under the microscope. Also learned about measuring in oz, grams, kilograms, and gallons. D reviewed the letter Hh and started learning about the letter Ee, the hexagon and triangle shape, and joined us in learning about wild animals found in the grasslands. Next week we will continue our studies on Africa: Kenya.
