My Father's World: Unit 3 Leaf

MFW: Unit 3 Leaf

I WILL LIVE AND GROW IN JESUS

For our third unit of our MFW curriculum we studied leaves, the letter Ll and number 3.  We were very busy for this unit, especially exploring the great outdoors.

LETTER Ll

Like we did for the previous units we searched the house for things that began with the letter Ll and grouped them together.  This is always a fun activity for Kanani, she always looks forward in helping me prepare each lesson.

BOOKS

A picture of the books we used for this unit.

WORKSHEETS

Top left picture she is practicing her cursive handwriting for the letter Ll, middle and right top picture she is using her rods to complete her worksheets.  Bottom left picture I had her spell out the word LEAF and search for the number 3 to place on the board.  She also used the Leap Frog Magnet letter L to hear the sound of the letter.  Bottom right picture is her completed work of writing the number 3 and she wanted me to take her picture pretending to eat the cookie.

Cut and paste worksheet and her color sequence worksheet from her curriculum.

Top left picture she is working on searching for the pictures that start with the letter L and the top right is her practicing to write the letter Ll.  The bottom two pictures is a game I set up for her.  I placed the letters Ss, Mm, and Ll (the letters we have gone through), and gave her the stack of pictures.  She had to place the pictures under the matching letters.

I made a flip book with different color leaves on each page.  Got this idea from Flying into First, here's the link for a free download of the book:

Top left picture is where she had to draw a picture of something that began with the letters we have done already (S, M, L).  I made a picture of a leaf and showed her the parts of the leaf, almost like her lap book just easier for her to understand.  She got it on the first try.

MATH

Top left and middle she is working on her math from Math U See, and the top right is of her measuring leaves.  Bottom pictures I placed the number tiles in random order and had her put the correct number of leaves under the numbers.

GEOBOARD

Had her make a uppercase L and lowercase l one of her geoboards.  Love these boards we use them for so many things, they are a lot of fun to use.

LAPBOOK

I had made a leaf lap book from the last time we had studied leaves.  On one side is the different parts of the leaves labeled and the other is where she labels the leaf herself.

ARTS & CRAFTS

Had Kanani use leaf stickers to form the letter Ll.

We did leaf some rubbing.

Drew some leaves on a paper and then filled a pan with shaving cream.  Placed a couple of drops in the shaving cream and swirled it around with a popsicle stick.  Kanani then laid the paper in the shaving cream.  Afterwards she used a window scrapper to clean the shaving cream off the paper.  It came out so pretty, then she wanted to mix the colors together. Shaving cream is always so much fun.

Her finished work from the shaving cream art.

Here I set up some paint and her use q-tips to paint or tap leaves on the tree.  We went over what colors we used.  At first I only had the primary colors on the tray (red, yellow, and blue), then she mixed the colors to make orange (yellow and red) and green (blue and yellow).  She painted the bottom of the picture red to represent the pile of leaves.  The bottom right picture are some wood maple leaves I found for her to paint.  She loves to paint!!!

Made sun catchers with some of the leaves we got from outside.  Cut the center of two paper plates and had Kanani paint them whatever colors she wanted.  While the paint dried Kanani placed the leaves on the contact paper.  Once dried I placed the contact paper on one plate and then placed the other plate on top to seal the paper.  It came out so cute. I then wrote the memory versus on the plate  "I WILL LIVE AND GROW IN JESUS."

I cut out a shape of a leaf on two green construction papers and then punched holes around the leaf.  She then laced and traced the leaf, and after stuffed then with some of the left over paper I had from when I cut the leaves out. We also made a brownie in the shape of tree or leaf, it was so tasty.

SCIENCE

She loves using the microscope, just like her mama, my future little scientist.  The top left picture I had a pine leaf slide, love how the picture came out.  Bottom left picture is of one of the leaves we pulled from the bushes in front of the house, the picture looks so neat.  She was amazed how the leaves looked under the microscope.

Put some of the leaves we gathered and placed them in a basket and gave Kanani and Dartanian a magnifying glass. Love how little man would look at his sister to see how to use the magnifying glass.  As soon as he saw her and immediately did the same thing.  She was excited to tell me everything she saw on the leaf and how neat it was to see the details on the leaves.

My cute little scientists.

We had gathered some leaves and identified what they were then taped them to the paper and placed it in a plastic page protector.

Had Kanani watch "The Magic School Bus" on plants, it gave details on everything on leaves and how they get their nutrition and how they grow.

In our curriculum one of the activities Kanani was supposed to do was collect leaves and place them on paper towels and then place some newspaper on top of the towel. Once done with that she had to place it in a book for a couple of days to flatten the leaves.  At the end of the week we took the leaves out and started to try to identify each leaf we collected.  I found a wonderful app called Leafsnap, it's an awesome app to help identify leaves.  The bottom middle picture is how the app looks like and the bottom right is a picture of some of the leaves in the app.  I was so excited to come across this app, it has been very helpful.

I AM THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD

Our second unit was the MOON unit (letter Mm and number 2).  Here are all the activities and work we have in this unit.

MOON LETTER Mm

Kanani went and searched for different items that began with the letter M.

BOOKS

Here the books we read for this unit.

PHASES OF THE MOON

Found a flip book on https://www.teacherspayteachers.com for free of the moon phases.  Had her cut some pages out and then punch holes in the corner and placed a book ring through the hole.

Top left picture is the moon phases we had done in the past with a paper plate, which came in handy for this unit.  Top right picture is Kanani's observation of the phases of the moon during this week.  The bottom picture is some of the pictures and books we studied of the phases of the moon.

MFW WORKSHEETS

Handwriting practice and search for objects starting with the letter Mm worksheets from her MFW curriculum.

Cut and paste worksheets from her MFW curriculum.

Top left and bottom left pictures she found different objects around the house to check if they were magnetic.  I had her make two lines one that she believed were magnetic and one that wasn't magnetic.  She was excited she got her hypothesis right.  The middle top picture she is working on her some more math from Math U See, she really likes math now.  Top right and bottom right picture is where she was supposed to draw pictures of something starting with the letter M and letter S.  Then I had her write the word of what she was drawing under the picture, even though the directions said to have them write the letter M or S three times.

Top picture is a moon she cut out of bubble wrap and glued it to yellow paper.  She said she wanted to put it on yellow paper because it represented the sun and that how we could see the moon.  By the reflection of the sun.  Bottom pictures are of her working on some of the worksheets from MFW curriculum.

Working with her Cuisenaire Rods and worksheets, little man wanted in on the action too.

MATH

Pulled out our Math Uni-loc that I bought from Wal-Mart when she was in Pre-Kinder.  She really has enjoyed working with theses.  Perfect for adding and subtracting, and sequencing.

Working on her Math U See worksheets.

Working on some cursive, and handwriting the letter Mm and number 2.

BADGE

Made our Mm Badge for the unit  "I am the light of the world".

ARTS & CRAFT

Mixed together some white paint with flour and then traced a can of crackers on black paper.  Kanani painted the inside of the circle with the paint mixture I made for her. She then used a top of a water bottle and imprinted the moon to make it look like craters in the moon.  Got this idea from the website of Mrs. Russell's Creative Class:

I cut  a moon from a paper plate and after she was done coloring it she hung a star from it.  She didn't want the moon to be alone.  Top right picture is some of her work she wanted to display on the chimney for everyone to see.  She is so proud of all her work, so are we.

One of the crafts in the curriculum was to do a moble of the sun and moon.  First cut and glued some shapes to make the sun (circle and rectangles).  She then glued the sun and moon sides together.  Made a hole on the top of the paper and took some yarn and tied it to hang it on the chimney.  As it turns you will see the sun and moon sides.

SIZE OF THE MOON

In the teacher manual they had an activity called the relative size of the moon.  We used our globe and a small beach ball to represent the moon.  Compared size of both and then measured out 10 feet between the balls to show their relative size and distance apart.

MOON DOUGH

Set out some moon dough that we've had for a couple of years.  Found this gem at a consignment store.  You can also buy some at http://www.toywiz.com/ or you can make your own moon dough.  Below is a website that I used to make some more for the kids.  It's like play dough but so much softer and smells so good.  You will be hooked once you start playing with it, it's very relaxing sensory play.

Moon dough recipe:
We read the book "The moon might be milk" by Lisa Shulman, in the back of the book is a recipe on how to make sugar cookie moons.  It was based on the book and we definitely had to make some.  They were pretty good and so easy to make.

Even little man enjoyed some moon cookies once they were cooled.

PAINTING WITH ICE

I froze some star and moon shaped for the kids to play outside with.  They were suppose to use it to paint the side walk but they wanted to play with it in the water table.  Whatever makes them happy.  The kids kept taking them out of the bucket and transferring it to the water table, then they added some water to the table.  Every thing is a lot more fun with water.

Once all the ice melted they wanted to get wet, as you can tell by the looks on their faces they were having a blast.

SPACESHIP FORT

We didn't have a box to make a rocketship/spaceship so we decided to make one like a fort and pretend we were flying in space.  She has shown so much interest in space lately.  Who knows maybe one day we will get to go to space and experience it for ourselves.

CLASSICAL COMPOSERS

I decided to finish printing out the composers that are on the cd "Say Hello to Classical Music" and make a small book with them.  I used a book ring to hold them together.  On the back side of each picture I wrote a brief description or biography of each composer.  If you want a copy of the pictures I can email them to you. I've been trying to make a link so you can download them just haven't been able to, so until then I can email them to you.

POEM

THE MOON
    By: Robert Louise Stevenson

The moon has a face like the clock in the hall;
She shines on thieves on the garden wall,
On streets and field and harbor quays,
And birdies asleep in forks of the trees.

The squalling cat and the squeaking mouse,
The howling dog by the door of the house,
The bat that lies in bed at noon.
All love to be out by the light of the moon.

But all of the things that be long to the day,
Cuddle to sleep to be out her way;
And flowers and children close their eyes
Till up in the morning the sun shall arise.

My Father's World: Raisin and Bean Experiments

We've done two experiments so far since we started our MFW curriculum.  First experiment was seeing grapes turn into raisins by leaving them in the sun.  Second experiment was a bean experiment, seeing how it grows in the light and dark.  Kanani has been keeping a science journal in order to keep track of her observations.

RAISIN EXPERIMENT

We took 8 green seedless grapes placed them in a bowl and put them outside on a table in direct sunlight.  As each day went by Kanani would write down her observations of the grapes as they would go through the process of changing into raisins.

As each day went by the grapes would shrivel, shrink, and change their colors from green to brown.

When we reached day eight the grapes started to look more like raisins.  We will update when the grapes have turned completely into raisins.  From what I've researched it usually takes two weeks to complete.  Guess we will have to wait and see.

BEAN EXPERIMENT

I found this great bean model life cycle, which went perfect with our bean experiment.  We bought ours at Michael's but you can also find them at the website below.

https://www.safariltd.com/products/view/life-cycle-series-life-cycle-of-a-green-bean-plant-figurines-662416

We talked about the life cycle of a bean and she was able to observe each step of the bean's growth through the models.  Perfect way to get a better understanding of the bean's life cycle before the actual experiment.

I printed out the bean life cycle and glued them to a green index card.  Then placed the cards in random order for her to put them in their correct order.   Found these on the website of Teachers pay Teachers.

We placed each bean in a plastic ziplock bag with cotton balls around the beans.  Kanani soaked the cotton balls in water and then placed the bean in between the cotton balls.  One bag was placed in direct sunlight while the other one was placed in our bedroom, which has no sunlight, it's pretty dark.

It has only been six days and the bean that was placed in the dark has grown almost triple the amount of the one in the light.  We were quite surprised that even though the bean had no direct sunlight it still grew.  The main thing we noticed was that even though it had grown a lot more the coloration was dull.  This was the perfect opportunity to discuss photosynthesis and how the sun affects plants.  This experiment was not at all the way we had expected it to go.

Unfortunately the weather hasn't cooperated with us to be able to finish our raisin experiment.  We had to throw them away they got really gross looking.

Hope you enjoy our experiments.

GOD BLESS!
