Resurrection Unit (Easter)

RESURRECTION UNIT

JESUS IS RISEN

Luke 24: 6-7

He is not here; he has risen!  Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee.  'The son of man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.

We started off the week learning about the resurrection of Jesus.  How he died on the cross for our sins and on the third day rose again.  We made this craft with coffee filter and then I outlined and colored in the 3 crosses on a paper plate.

Here are some of the books (BIBLE) we used to tell about the Resurrection.

Wonderful movie we watched by the Veggie Tales on the Easter Carol.

We went to our weekly story time and craft at our local library.  Mrs. Rita read different stories on Easter and then the kids made Easter crafts.

Dartanain and Kanani working hard on their Easter crafts.

She was so proud how her crafts came out.

After story time and crafts the kids went did an Easter egg hunt in the library.  Each child was only allowed to pick 5 eggs each, in each egg there was a number.  Once they finished getting their eggs we went back to the activity room and opened the eggs.  Depending on the number it depended on what prizes they would get.

At my parents church they had an Easter service for the kids.  There the kids went to 3 different stations which would tell about different parts of the Resurrection.  Once they completed all three stations they headed to the main sanctuary for praise and worship and then the children's leader spoke about the Resurrection.  Once she was done they asked all the kids from ages 4 through 5 grade to go to the altar to get their feet washed as a symbol of when Jesus washed his disciples feet.

We went on a field trip with our wonderful homeschool co-op to Hubb's Corn Maze for an Easter egg hunt.  Dartanian was very excited to see the Easter bunny.

At our church they had an Eggstravangza for the kids.  Here Kanani is helping our kids pastor talk about the Resurrection using the Resurrection eggs.

After the lesson on the Resurrection the kids went on a Easter egg hunt.

Once they were done with the Easter egg hunt they went back inside and did different stations that had different activities for them to do.  In this station they colored some pictures of the Resurrection and then glued the pictures on the cross.

In this station they used water colors to paint eggs to reveal the hidden messages or pictures on the eggs.

The last station was decorating cupcakes, Kanani and Dartanian preferred to eat the cupcakes with no decor.

Made this cute Easter eggs using the kids thumbprints.  Love how cute they came out, even made some for their grandparents.

The kids all dressed up for Resurrection Day at church.

Star and Constellations Unit

STAR AND CONSTELLATIONS UNIT

FOR THE STARS OF HEAVEN AND THEIR CONSTELLATIONS

Some of the items we have for our star unit

BOOKS

Great books on stars and constellations

WORKSHEETS

We didn't do much with worksheets instead we made copied constellations on black construction paper and then she made her own constellation.  She came up with Cheetah Face when happy.
MATH

ARTS & CRAFT

Pulled out the play-doh for Kanani to make stars with using star shaped cookie cutters.  Then asked her to arrange them by size by largest to smallest.

Dartanian enjoyed poking the play-doh with one of the tools they have.

ACTIVITIES/GAMES

I placed some pom poms in our star silicone mold and gave them some prongs to pick up the pom poms.  Dartanian decided to just dump them out, it was easier than using the prongs.
SCIENCE

We have two different flash light that show the constellations in the dark.  Got them both at our local thrift stores for a great deal.  It was fun sitting in the dark and observing all the different constellations.

SNACK

Kanani and me baked a cake and then decorated it with some star sprinkles to go with our theme this week.

SPANISH

Estrellas y constelaciones (starts and constellations)

MEMORY VERSUS

For the stars of heaven and their constellations will not flash forth their light; the sun will be dark when it rises and the moon will not shed its light.

POEM

GOD'S STARS ON STAGE
     By: Bill Hoeneveld

God stages a show every night,
For us to stare at with delight,
Light years travelled to reach the Earth,
These stars created before our birth.

Galactic travellers dot the sky,
We don't know the reason why.
What's their purpose, we don't know,
Just sit back and enjoy the show.

CLASSICAL MUSIC

Applebaum, Mark Martian Anthropology (Innova 617)

We have enjoyed learning all about stars and learning all the different types of constellations.  God is such a great artist.

GOD BLESS!

Our Pets (more like family)

OUR FAMILY

I grew up around many different types of animals.  We've had chicks, ducks, all types of fish, rats, mice, guinea pigs, rabbits, all types of birds, kittens-cats, puppies-dogs, different types of lizards, turtles, tortoises, chinchillas, ferrets, hamsters, gerbils, and different types of frogs.  Then I used to work at a pet store, which didn't help, i rescued many animals while working there.  Learned a lot about animals and it only made my love for them grow even more.  It's hard not to want to rescue all animals we see.  My children both have the same love for animals.  If it was up to them we would have many more pets.

It's a wonderful feeling finding great homes for all the animals we've rescued, even though its hard because you fall in love with each one and don't want to let them go.

Here is a little something about our beloved pets in our home.

PUYO OUR COCKER SPANIEL

Our beloved son who passed away July 2010.  He was with me since he was 6 weeks old before my husband and me got together.  This was taken as one of our wedding pictures, we decided on getting our pictures taken with him instead of our wedding pictures.  We wanted to remember him not only in our hearts but in pictures as well.  I always say he is the one that taught me how to be a mother.  He was always there for me.  He adopted me when I lived in Puerto Rico.  He changed my whole life around.  Miss him every day and wish he could be here with me, but I take comfort in knowing he has crossed the Rainbow Bridge and is in a much better place with no pain.  I pray someday we will see each other again.

COCO OUR COCK-A-TIEL

CoCo joined our family before my husband and me married.  I bought him at the pet store I was working at the time.  He has always been so sweet and I used to carry him around the store on my shoulder.  After having him in the store for a month I decided on adopting him.  We've been together for 10 years and going strong.  I've had many birds before him but he is the first one that I've had that doesn't mimic what we say, doesn't eat sunflower seeds, and prefers to walk then fly. I love how unique and sweet he is.

ZEUS OUR DACHSHUND/RAT TERRIER MIX

We adopted Zeus from a co-worker when I worked at the pet store.  He was 6 months old and I was 6 months pregnant with Kanani.  Zeus used to fall asleep on my belly when he was smaller.  He had a special bond with Kanani from the beginning.  We got him because in the current situation he was in at the time wasn't a good one.  We fell in love with him and knew he was meant to be part of our growing family.  Also wanted a companion for Puyo who was going through so much, health wise, at the time.  The sweetest, most patient, and loving puppy we have ever had.  The kids can do whatever they want to him and he tolerates them, Kanani has even dressed him up and he just sits there looking at us all pitiful.  We love our little puppy, he will always be our puppy no matter how old he gets.

LARRY-BOY OUR BEARDED DRAGON

Larry joined our family 3 years ago in March of 2013.  He was suppose to be a birthday present for me at the time but Kanani also fell in love with him when we got him, she was 3 years old at the time.  He is very laid back and has a foot fetch.  He can't see someone barefoot that he immediately goes to their foot and starts licking it.  When he is lose in the house he climbs everything and goes fast.  Loves his veggies, earthworms, and crickets.  Not to keen on bath but tolerates it.

BETTAS

Got two of these bettas (two on the right) for the kids as their Easter present last year (2015), and the left one ended up ours after my nephews went back home after visiting in the summer last year (2015). Their names are (top right) Rojo, (bottom right) Swimmey, (right) Big Red.

GOLDFISH

Our latest edition to our family are 4 goldfish.  We went to PetSmart and saw this globe fish bowl.  I've always wanted one, as soon as I saw this I just had to get it.  The plus side it was on sale which made my decision to get it even easier.  Of course we needed to add some fish to it so we bought 4 goldfish to represent our family of 4.  Their names are Shark Bait, Spot, BB-8, and Sherbet.

Solar System Unit

SOLAR SYSTEM UNIT

THE GLORY OF GOD

A sensory bin I put together for Kanani to enjoy.

BOOKS

Some of the books we used for this unit, most of which we actually own.  We love everything dealing with the Solar System.

WORKSHEETS

Working on cvc words and learning to distinguish long sounds and short sounds.

Working on her reading

Poster I purchased at Dollar Tree

Here is a closer look at some of our maps on our Geography wall.  We took a close look at our beautiful planet Earth.

MATH

Adding and Subtracting number that equal 10.

ART & CRAFTS

Bought this cute sun catcher at Dollar Tree, the girls painted them and then Kanani hung hers on the window.

Printed out this planet worksheet from The Crafting Chicks website. They colored it in then cut them out and glued them to black poster board.  We have ours hanging on some hooks on the fireplace.

Found this cute little worksheets on Twisty Noodle, after she colored in the planets she stapled them together to form a book.

ACTIVITIES/GAMES

Found an activity book at Dollar Tree on Space, it has a lot of different activities in it which Kanani has really enjoyed.

Kanani took out her pattern activity kit, I love it when she picks activities to do on her own.

We made Galaxy Slime with our friend who was over for a playdate.  This was our first time making some and it came out great.  Got the idea from The Kindergarten Smorgas Board blog.

Ingredients:
Clear Elmer's Glue (4oz)
1/4 cup of Liquid Starch
Glitter
Water Colors (blue, silver, yellow, and red)

The girls poured the entire bottle of glue in a bowl then mix in the watercolors.  They stirred it until it reached the color they wanted.  Then they added all the glitter they wanted, which was a lot of glitter.  Stirred it together and then added some liquid starch slowly while mixing together.  We only needed 1/4 cup to reach the way we wanted the slime to be.

Froze some baking soda that I had mixed with water and food coloring for several days.  Once we got a chance I brought them out and handed her a bottle with vinegar in it.  Love how quickly they start to fizz the colors are so pretty.

Once Kanani saw the sensory bin she dove right in and began to play.  She picked out all the planets and matched them with the card they came with.

SCIENCE

Used a couple of different items to show the solar system.  Top right picture is a solar system we made a couple of years ago, top left I ordered this set on ebay, and the bottom picture I bought at the Dollar Tree.

While Kanani was painting Dartanian was having fun with the interacting globe.

Observing her solar system cards and lithograph sets.

GEOGRAPHY

We had a busy day today so we decided to do floor puzzles, one was the World Map and the other the United State.  As we completed each one we would talk about what we saw on the puzzle and talk the places we want to visit some day.  Such a great quiet time activity to do with the kids.

VIDEOS/MOVIES

Little Einsteins has a cute show on planets and we borrowed a cute movie by the Cat in the Hat.

MEMORY VERSUS

The heavens are telling of the glory of God; and their expanse is declaring the work of His hands.

POEM

ALABASTER NIGHT
     By: Carrie Richards

There is stillness in this chilly night
How peaceful is a planet that glimmers white
Where frost and moonlight weave a silver glaze
And sillhouetted trees are black as ink
Where the only sign of life are whiffs of breath

Let me stand and drink upon the sky,
Then rest my eyes upon the glory of the world
Upon these strange and unfamiliar hills
I sense a night's aurora soothe my soul

Winter has buried our world in alabaster white
Familiar landmarks wear a cloak of new disguise
Yet still the same are scattered thorny lights
Splattered wildly in the blackness of a sky
Winter has polished up the stars against the dark
Brilliant, new, until their points are thistle sharp

How peaceful is a planet so glimmering white
To stand in voiceless wonder and gaze
Do not speak, the crystal world would shatter
Too fragile to bear the weight of words

CLASSICAL MUSIC

Planets by Gustav Holst

Kanani has always enjoyed all things dealing with the solar system. She is always asking about the different planets. It's so amazing to know that God has created our solar system. I'm in ah with such beauty. It's truly a work of art, thank you God for giving us such beauty for us to enjoy. We have about 4 different solar system figures if not more. Lots of books on the solar system. Next week we will be learning more on the constellations. I'll be posting about that at the end of next week.

GOD BLESS!
