My Father's World: Unit 11 Insect

MFW: Unit 11 Insect

I AM A WISE CHILD, SO I WORK HARD

Some of our treasures for insect unit this week

BOOKS

Some of the books we read this week

WORKSHEETS

Working on her handwriting and letter I sound

Doing her cusienaire rods worksheets

Doing her cut and paste worksheets, and identifying the pictures for the letter Ii.

Working on her worksheets, blend ladder, writing, and reading.

MATH

Counting insects and working on her MATH U SEE worksheet.

Working on our numbers from 40-60 this week, these are from our one hundred count down.

Grabbed some of our number cards (1-60) and scrambled them and had Kanani place them in the correct order.  She first would identify each number then place them in their ten spot.  After she was done separating them she placed teach group in the correct order.  She has

ARTS & CRAFT

Cut out 3 circles and 6 rectangle shapes for legs. Had her glue the shapes to popsicle sticks to make a puppet.  She glued them in the order she wanted and then glued the eyes and drew a mouth. Got this idea from Toddler Approved Blog.

Cut little triangles around a paper plate and drew a spider in the middle of the plate.  Then had Kanani made the spider web out of yarn, she then got some of the plastic insects we have and placed them in the web.  She said the spider caught some flies for dinner.  Got this idea from Teach Preschool Blog.

One of the activities mentioned in the teacher's manual was to paint some rocks red to make ladybug rocks.  We then sang the song 5 little ladybugs jumping on the plate (like 5 little monkey's jumping on the bed).

Kanani used the left over paint from her rock painting to paint a ladybug.  This isn't your normal ladybug for this one has two legs to help it stand up straight like us.  She said its a very unique ladybug because it's not like your regular ladybug, which makes it special.  Love her thought process with this painting.  GOD MADE US SPECIAL!

I had intended to do several different bugs with Kanani's thumbprint but she wanted a jar full of ladybugs.  She dipped her thumb in red paint and then pressed it in the jar.  Came out pretty cute.

ACTIVITIES/GAMES

One of our word cards had a bug on it, which went great with this unit.  Kanani first placed the word in the correct order BUG and then put the sentence on the back in the correct order THE BUG SITS ON THE RUG.  He really helps with her reading and spelling.

Dartanian got this cute ladybug from his grandparents when they came back from vacation.  It has a couple of classical music on it, letter sounds, number sounds, and shape recognition.  Cute little addition for our insect unit.

After reading these two cute books Kanani dressed up as a cute ladybug, then she told us all she learned about ladybugs.

In some rainbow pasta I hid a couple of the plastic insects we had and had the kids dig for the insects.  Kanani wore her spider man mask in search for dinner.  In the bottom left picture she has her serious spider face.  Bottom right picture she is eating her dinner of insects.  Such a great imagination.

I made a honeycomb for Kanani and placed several different color pom poms in a basket.  Places some prongs in the basket for her to use to transfer the pom poms into the honeycomb.  The pom poms represent pollen, when she was finished she wanted to dress up like a bee and hold her honeycomb. Got the idea from From ABC to Acts.

Made several cards of different insects with some moves for Kanani to make.  The move of the insects, she had so much fun playing and dancing.  Great idea from Oopsey Daisy Blog.

Went outside and drew some bugs with a letter in them on the driveway.  Kanani wanted to water them away with her watering can.  I would call out the letter or the sound the letter makes and then she would search for it and water the bug away.

Went on an insect scavenger hunt, searched our front and backyard for them.  Every time we went out Kanani would search for insects and ask what types of insect or bug they were.  Thankfully I had found this neat bug book kit that came with a bug container, magnifying glass, bug book, science journal for her to write down her finding, and a scavenger list.  Drew a scavenger hunt insect sheet for Kanani, got the idea from Mommy Style.

SNACK

In the teacher manual it mentioned doing some honey balls, but no one in my house is really too fond of honey like I am.  So I decided to make some Honey Bun cake, which is Kanani's favorite cake.  Love the look on her face, of course I had to place the cake in our bee bowl with the bee spoon.

SCIENCE

Bought the Ant life cycle stages figures and made some cards to go with the set.  Kanani placed the name, picture, and figure with the correct ones.  Even though they are not in the correct order she got the concept down.

Made a lap book for Kanani, the top half is identifying the ant's body parts and the bottom half is the ant's life cycle.

Here Kanani is identifying the ant's body parts

Looking at different insects from our Zoo Books and Insect identification book.

After reading the book "The Amazing Honey Bee" we made a honeycomb together.  She glued the honeycomb together, in one cell she glued yellow pom poms to represent honey, white rice to represent eggs, and some red rice to represent larvae.  Cute idea from the teacher manual.

MOVIES/VIDEOS

Watched some episodes of the Magic School Bus about ants and bees.  We also watched the movies "A Bug's life", we noticed that the ants in the movie only had 4 legs when ants are supposed to have 6 legs.  It's good to know that she was paying attention to our lessons on ants.

Learned about insects and ants using our Brain Pop app on her tablet.

After reading the story of "The Ant and the Grasshopper" we watched the story on Super Why.

MEMORY VERSUS

Whenever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord and not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward.  It is the Lord Christ you are serving.
~Colossians 3:23-24~

POEM

THE ANT
  By: Mary Ann Hoberman

The busy ant works hard all day,
And never stops to rest or play.
He carries things ten times his size,
And never grumbles, whines or cries.

And even climbing flower stalks,
He always runs, he never walks.
He loves his work he never tires,
And never puffs, pants or perspires.

You thought I praise is boundless rim,
I am not really fond of him.

CLASSICAL MUSIC

Rimsky-Korsakov: Flight of the Bumblebee

In this unit we learned a lot about different types of insects. An insect is a small invertebrate, or animal without a backbone.  Insects have 6 legs, most adult insects have 4 wings, and they also have 2 antennae on their heads.  They are the most successful creatures on earth.  There are more than a million species of insects in the world.

GOD BLESS!!
