Working on Letters and their sounds

ALPHABET

Scrambled the letters (Leap Frog Magnetic Letters) and then had her put them in the right order.  We also tired it backwards...it's a work in progress.

Identifying Colors and Vowels

After she placed the letters in order then she proceed to place the letters in groups by color.  What I loved about this was the fact that she did this on her own without me even asking her.  Afterwards we worked on our vowels.

Insect Unit

This week was all about the insects.

BEES

Studied beehives and bees functions in the hive.  Each bee has a purpose and they all work together to keep the hive functioning.

Love the Magic School Bus program and books.  We read the book "Inside a Beehive", which broke everything down in detail when it came to bees and the beehive.

FIELD TRIP

Ranger Mike did a great job explaining everything about insects and going into details about each one.

Kids are enjoying getting to touch the displays the Ranger has set out for them.

CATERPILLAR

Made a caterpillar with the letters of her last name.  She already knows how to spell and write her first and middle name.  It's been fun finding different ways to get her to spell her last name.  The poor thing has a long name.

BUTTERFLY

We do this type of art a lot which she loves to see the outcome each time.

VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR

The very hungry caterpillar is such a cute story, which we have enjoyed several times.  This time we actually watched a video of the Hungry Caterpillar on Netflix.   After watching the movie she painted the caterpillar by dipping her balloon in paint.  Anything dealing with paint is always fun.  Then she made some caterpillars by using pom poms, cloths pins, and googly eyes.  I let her use the hot glue, with my supervision of course.

GROW CAPSULES

Went to the Dollar Tree, such great finds at this store, and saw some growing capsules of insects.  We found that if you take the sponges out of the plastic capsules they come in helps the process of growth go faster.  If you have the patience to wait for the capsules to dissolve then you can just place the capsules directly in water.  After a few minutes the sponges grew and then we set them to the side to dry.  Once dry we tired identifying each insect, then looked at the back of the card to see if we were right.  You can also use the sponges to paint with, which we did but didn't get a picture.

Learned the life stages of a butterfly.
