Field Trip: Greenbrier State Park

 FIELD TRIP: GREENBRIER STATE PARK

Went with the family to Greenbrier State Park in Maryland after a coworker told my husband about it.  The park has beautiful hiking trails, parks for kids to play on, picnic tables, places for camping, fishing, and much more. There's lots of restrooms and some even have showers.   Favorite spot was the man made beach, which had lots of minnows, turtles, and other different types of fish.  We loved swimming with the fish and it was shallow enough for D to walk and jump all around.  The weather was perfect.  We went two times since finding out about this location.  First time was just us 4 and we weren't nearly as prepared like the second time.  When we went the second time we brought our wagon that held our lawn chairs, sand toys, and lots of food and water.  For the second time we took my parents and mother-n-law with us, they loved it as much as we did.  Kept saying how beautiful and relaxing the area was.  It was a wonderful trip, this will definitely be one of our go to trips.

SCIENCE

Prepped a chicken bone for next week's experiment.

Read about rivers, water filtration, dirty rivers, and hydroelectric power stations.

In the teacher's manual it suggested for us to use a carton but all we had was a juice jug.  D pourted 3" of rocks/gravel on the bottom, then poured 3" of sand on top, once completed he poured water in the jug.  We saw how the water went through the sand and rocks, and somewhat came out clear.  It was a bit muddy but helped him get a better understanding of water filtration.

Read all about our joints and the ways they work.

After reading about our spine and how it worked the book suggested we make our own with cardboard and spools.  Didn't have any spools and saw on Pinterest someone did one using egg carton, felt, and pipe cleaners.  The kids made their own and really enjoyed this activity.  Especially excited to tell their dad about how their spine work and show him using their example.  The felt represents the discs in our back.

Got a better understanding of our skeleton, joints, ad sockets.  K built her skeleton, hand and foot bones, and joints which she glued to card stock to make it stable.

Very proud of her hard work.

Kids got out their miniature skeleton to get a better look of our bones.

Made a copy of the skeleton in the book for D to make his own puppet.  He carried it everywhere with him and kept saying "I'm holding my bones in my hand".
