MFW: RtR and Learning Gods Story Week 13

  MFW:  RTR AND LEARNING GOD'S STORY WEEK 13

This week we will learn about Blandina, Constantine, Athanasius, Ambrose, the Roman fest, Christianity, Fall of Rome, Church Divided, and the Nicene Creed.  Also learn about God creating the plants, lights: sun, moon, and stars, fish and birds.  Discuss several books of the bible: Deuteronomy, Joshua, Judges, and Ruth.  

BOOKS


A few of the books we used this week.  

BIBLE

~Genesis 1:9-13, 14-19, 20-23

~Romans 12:1-6a, 19, 20, 21, 22

~Romans 3:23, 5:8, 8:28

On the third day God created the plants.


The Fourth day God created the light: Sun, Moon, and Stars.

Learned about several books of the Bible: Deuteronomy, Joshua, Judges, and Ruth.

LANGUAGE ARTS


Latin words this week:  BRACCHIUM (arm) and CORPUS, CORPORIS (body).


Copy work and working on simple sentences.


Crossword puzzle and learning about predicate(s).


Definitions and working on compound sentences.


Simple sentences, compound sentences, and sensory words.


Working together on their spelling words.


Reading, writing, and spelling practice.


Lots of new words for D this week.


Learning about the letter y sound that sounds like an e.

MATH 


100 Chart (49-53), number of the day, weather, and calendar chart.


Word problems, multiplication, and division work.


More review work this week.  


Review work and word problems.


Multiplication, division, and changing decimals to fractions.


While I read to them they make beautiful creations using their wood shapes.


Adding and subtracting worksheets.


In the TM it said to use seeds from different fruits to make a graph.  I decided to go with a box of M&M's instead, thought since he really likes them it would be more fun.  On the plus side we reviewed his colors and his numbers.  He really enjoyed this activity and wanted to try with other foods, anything that he can eat afterwards.


More adding and subtracting fun, him and his many faces....lol.

This week we reached Day 50 of school.  He grouped together his M&M's in groups of ten, counted by 10's to 50, and finished another one of his bean sticks.   Then we all jumped 50 times, ran in place 50 times, and counted different things to 50.  


Subtracting to find the correct color for his pictures.

TIMELINE 


Added Rome becomes Christian under Constantine, Fall of Rome, and Byzantine Empire to our timeline.

HISTORY 


Read about the Fall of Rome, Early Small Churches, and the food and feasting the Roman's did.  


This week we had our Roman feast during lunch.  There was nuts, raisins, chicken to represent peacock, bread, turkey slices, apples, pears, peas, plums, boiled eggs, and grape juice to represent wine. 


Learned about the New Jerusalem, more on the Fall of Rome, and the divided empire.


Organization of the church, the Nicene Creed, and the Christian Church being divided.


K followed along on her Nicene Creed worksheet while I read it to her and then she drew a shamrock to represent the Holy Trinity: God the Father, The Son, and the Holy Spirit.


After reading about the Christian symbol K drew her own to put in her notebook.

SCIENCE 


Weather worksheet for the week.


After reading about the distance of the Moon and Earth we did the exercise in the book.  He couldn't believe how far the moon actually was from earth, to him it seemed a lot closer.  We used our planet magnets and some yarn for this exercise.  


Discussed the phases of the moon and then made some using Oreo's, of course the kids favorite part was getting to eat the cookies afterwards. 


D played with the Solar System Magnets and the Safari Ltd Solar System while I worked with K on her math.


On the third day God created the plants.  Observed several different seeds and then went to our garden to see the ones we had planted: Cilantro, red beans, and squash.  


God created light on the 4th day: Sun, Moon, and the Stars.  Read about how one side of the earth is day and the other side is night.  Then we got our mini globe and flashlight and demonstrated how it looked (day and night).  


Fifth day God created the birds and the fish.  He observed several different feathers we had from when we went to Puerto Rico several years ago.  My grandmother loves birds and has several beautiful ones on her property.  The feathers from left to right, red one is a fake one we use for crafts, then it's a male peacock feather, a small Cock-a-Tiel feather (from our bird CoCo), a female brown peacock feather, and a Macaw feather.

We have several bird feeders in our back deck, love watching the many different birds that come to eat.  We've seen Blue Jays, Robins, Cardinals, Hummingbirds, and many different kinds of finches.   One time we even saw a Hawk, we think he was trying to catch a finch but they were to fast for him.  


Faded Paper: placed several items on construction paper and let it sit in the sun on the table on the deck.  He enjoyed seeing the imprint on the paper.


This week we studied all about our digestive system.


Got a closer look of our digestive system with our book of the Human Body, one of our great finds from a thrift store.


Working hard on her digestive system, she then added it to her skeleton model.

Discussed the 6 groups of nutrients and then did the cracker experiment: they had to chew the cracker without swallowing it to see how the salvia worked to make the food mushy or easier for us to swallow.  


Learning about the layers of our stomach.


Had to redo our board to make everything fit better, it's coming along quite nicely.


After reading about our esophagus and how it pushes food down we did the experiment with the straw and piece of paper.  It helped demonstrate how our muscles contract to help push the food down to our stomach.  

ART


Lesson 109: Symbolic Colors

MUSIC/VIDEOS


Listened to "The Best of Mozart: violin concerto No. 4 in D major".


Watched "Storybots Super Songs: Outer Space and Human Body".


This week was Columbus and watched a short clip about him on Brain Pop.


Watched a short clip about our digestive system on our Brain Pop App.

FIELD TRIP/EVENTS 


This week the kids had their eye exam, it's been a busy month full of doctor appointments.  They both did great and have great vision, no glasses for them.  


Kids have enjoyed the beautiful weather this week, they have spent a lot of time outdoors getting rid of lots of energy.

CONCLUSION 

This week we learned about Blandina, Constantine, Athanasius, Ambrose, the Roman fest, Christianity, Fall of Rome, Church Divided, and the Nicene Creed.  Also learned about God creating the plants, lights: sun, moon, and stars, fish and birds.  Discussed several books of the bible: Deuteronomy, Joshua, Judges, and Ruth.  Been a fun week of learning, now unto next week to see what adventures are in store for us.
