MFW Learning God's Story: Week 8

MFW: LEARNING GOD'S STORY WEEK 8

This week we will be learning about the rain, long u short e, finish her animal tale book, some of the authors of the Bible, and adding by cents.

BOOKS

So many great books for our study on the rain

BIBLE

Learned that beavers weave together sticks, branches, reeds, and small tree trunks to build their dams and then use mud to make the dam secure.  They are always working making sure their dam is safe, they never give up.  Just like them we should never quit, we should work hard not give up: ENDURANCE.

Otters are very playful animals who love to swim and play in the water. When they are tired they roll themselves up in a long piece of seaweed and fall asleep in their blanket while the waves rock them to sleep. Like the otters when we are tired we need to rest so we can be healthy and happy.

Many people misunderstand owls or have a misconception about them. They are scared of the unknown, but those who know about owls know they aren't scary at all.  Farmers love having them around since they get rid of pests like rats and mice.  God knows there are many things we don't understand, but he doesn't want us to be afraid.  He is always with us so we don't need to be afraid.

BIBLE VERSE

Memory Verse: He who gathers crops in summer is a wise son, but he who sleeps during harvest is a disgraceful son.
~Proverbs 10:5

...for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be strong in character and ready for anything.
~James 1:4

I will lie down in peace and sleep, for you alone, O Lord, will keep me safe.
~Psalm 4:8

But when I am afraid, I put my trust in you.
~Psalm 56:3

ACTIVITIES

To go with our math activity we put together a dramatic play area of a restaurant.  She couldn't wait to start playing.

The cute owner of the restaurant

Prepared a menu for her restaurant

Here she is adding her customers bills and giving them their total.  Such a fun way to practice addition.

My order and bill

She said it was my turn to serve her, love any activity that we can enjoy together.

We moved some things around to add a keyboard to the restaurant, so there would be music while her customers ate.

Found these cute felt money at our local Target dollar section, was so excited to find something that would last longer than the paper bills we have.  Little man has ripped or tired to eat the paper ones.

Kanani has been showing some interest in learning how to sew, one of her stuff puppies had a small hole on its back.  I showed her what she would need to close the hole and gave her a quick demonstration on how to sew, she caught on quickly.
SCIENCE

This week we talked about the rain so I found this really neat poster on the Water Cycle at Dollar Tree last year which went perfect for this week's science lesson.

Put together the "Rain in a Jar" experiment for the kids.  All you need is a glass jar, food coloring, dropper, a small cup or container, shaving cream, and water.  Fill half the jar with water and then put shaving cream on top of the water.  Get the small cup and fill it with water and place a few drops of food coloring in it, this is what the kids will use with their dropper to drop several drops of water into the shaving cream (which represents clouds).  They will have to put several drops of food coloring water into the shaving cream before seeing the rain.  Its a very neat experiment which Kanani is always asking to do.

Found this great felt map of the United State at our local Target, gotta say it looks great on our Geography wall.

This week called for rain for most of the week, which went great for our rain lesson of the week.  We made a rain gauge out of a jug of milk, which I cut the day before, to measure how much rain came down.

Here are our rain measurements at different times in a day

Made a cloud and rain model using a cake pan, cookie sheet, and water. Watched as the hot water vapor rose and met the cold air near the tray. Turned into tiny water droplets on the bottom of the metal tray.

Made another cloud rain model but this time using ice to represent the clouds and a glass jar 2/3 full of boiling water.  She enjoyed watching the droplets fall into the water as the ice melted in the bowl.

Lake Model: filled a jar with water and then marked the water level with some tape.  We would observe the water level go down just a little bit each, process called evaporation.

POEMS

RAIN
     By: Author Unknown

Rain on the rooftops,
Rain on the trees.
Rain on the green grass,
But not on me!

VIDEOS

FIELD TRIP

The kids won a certificate for Summer Reading Achievement which you get when you read over 12 hours.

Went to the library for story time, since we went early the kids were able to enjoy some of the toys they have at the library while we waited.

For story time the kids learned about why we celebrate the Fourth of July and then they made their own fireworks in a bottle.  Put some corn syrup in the bottle and then fill it with water.  Next you poor several different colors of glitter in the water and shake.  Such a fun and easy project.

END OF WEEK

Of course the kids had to enjoy playing in the rain since we've been studying about the rain this week.

It has been a week of lots of fun and adventure with many different types of experiments to go with our rain lesson.  Plus it has been a rainy week which has gone awesome for us.  Unto week 9 to see what adventures it holds for us.

GOD BLESS!
