MFW Learning God's Story: Week 3

MFW: LEARNING GOD'S STORY WEEK 3

This week we learned about the four seasons and also observed different flowers now that it's spring.

BOOKS

Here are some of the books we read this week.

BIBLE

We learned about Grizzly bears in our devotion.  Did you know that when a newborn cub is blind and has no teeth and no fur.  It is only 8" long and weighs just over a pound.  It's about the size of a big banana.  But cubs grow fast.

In the devotion we learned about a strange creature the "Platypus".  Of course she wanted to take her picture with the famous Perry the Platypus from Phines and Ferb.  We learned that the only place on the planet where we can find them is in the creeks and swamps of eastern Australia.  Also learned that we should never try to make someone feel bad just because they don't look or act like us.  God make us all special.  Love how her drawings are coming along, she did awesome drawing Agent Perry.

Talked about the monarch butterfly and we reviewed its Life Cycle using our Safariology Life Cycle Figurines.  We must trust in God and He will help us every day.  He promises he will always be with us.

BIBLE VERSE

Memory Versus:  If you really want to become wise, you must begin by having respect for the Lord....
~Proverbs 9:10

[Jesus said]...Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle, and you will find rest for your souls.
~Matthew 11:29

And yet, Lord, you are our Father...We are all formed by your hand.
~Isaiah 64:8

"For I know the plans I have for you", says the Lord. "They are plans for good and not disaster, to give you a future and a hope."
~Jeremiah 29:11

WORKSHEETS

Working on writing her last letters Y and Z and writing out the memory versus for the week (Proverbs 9:10).

Identifying the pictures with the long i and working on her understanding of stories.

Enjoying her little reading books.

Completing her short a worksheet.

Wrote out the vowels on our dry erase board and then Kanani wrote the letters out.  Once done writing she read the cards and then placed them under the correct vowel and I would write the symbol to show whether the vowel was short or long one.

Colored and then laminated all 4 square worksheets for Kanani to be able to go back as many times needed to work with them and durability.

Used our bananagram tiles to spell out the words I would call out to her.

Saw this idea on Pinterest and thought to show Kanani since she keeps confusing her b and d.  It actually helped her throughout the day tell the letters apart.  She thought it was so funny and very helpful.

Reviewing her sight words

Today we worked on short e.

Learned about the short i

She's really enjoying these 4 square worksheets

MATH

Working on the number of the day.

She took it upon herself to count the numbers on her 100 chart, I'm so has enjoyed counting.  She's done this several times this week and each time is getting faster at counting.  I hope one day she will count 1-100 without needing the chart.

Identifying numbers that come before, after, and in the middle.

Practicing more on her numbers that come before, after, and in the middle.

Started working on her bean cup this week.

Here is our bean cup section, the stick with the beans will go into the black cup, the glue is still drying.

Working on skip counting by 2 and 5.

So excited to have reached day #12, can't believe how fast this school year is going.

ARTS & CRAFTS

Working on her copying drawing sheet on her light table.

Even though this really has nothing to do with the lesson this week its always nice to sit down and relax while painting.

We made a cute little book of the four seasons, she wanted me to join her in this activity so I made my own while she made hers.

After reading the book Dandelion Adventures we painted a dandelion in different colors with all of our thumbprints.  She then found a dandelion outside and had fun blowing it and making a wish.

Read a short story about Abby's Flower Garden and then drew some daisies.

ACTIVITIES

Learned about the four seasons, it was more of a review for us.  Printed out these worksheets and poems from The Imagination Nook Blog.

We've been working counting by the dozen so I set up a clean and wash station with 12 ponies for the kids to play with.

Put 12 different wooden blocks in a basket and had Kanani count them, then sort them into groups, and then tell me the difference between all of them.

Searched for 12 different types of balls and then explained how they are each different and alike.

After learning about the number 12 I hid 12 plastic eggs around the living room for the kids to search for them.  This is one of Kanani's favorite games, she says its like looking for buried treasure.

After the egg hunt she put together her clock and then we went over time.

SCIENCE

A beautiful flower has bloomed at my parents house, wish I could figure out what type of flower it is.

Got some roses for Mother's Day from my loving family.

Took apart some of the roses since they were dying.  Printed out a copy of an anatomy of a rose, found this online can't remember the website I got it from.

Took some rose petals and placed in a book and then we placed several books on top of that book to flatten the petals.  Will leave them there till the end of the week.  Here she took one of the petals and taped it in her science notebook and then drew a picture with roses in it.

How the roses look after a week in the between the construction paper and books.

Once done writing in her science notebook we observed the parts of the rose under the microscope.

Here is what we observed in the microscope.

Little man pulled the basket of pinecones down and started to look at the different pine cones.  I gave him a magnifying glass for him to be able to observe them closer.  Once Kanani saw him observing she wanted to join in on the fun and pulled the rock basket down to observe some of the gems in the basket.  Our future scientist in the making.

After 6 days our beans have started to sprout.

This week we talked about the FOUR SEASONS.  Here is a canvas of what we did last year as a symbol for our homeschool.  The hand is Kanani's hand which represents why we started to homeschool and the thumbprints are all 4 of us since this is a family thing.  That's why I chose to name our school: FOUR SEASONS CHRISTIAN ACADEMY.  No matter the season we are always learning.

Reviewing the parts of a flower

Our 2nd attempt at trying to grow the bean in the jar, hope it works this time around.

GEOGRAPHY

Learned that Australia is south of the Equator and that their seasons are opposite from our seasons.  The countries south of the Equator enjoy seasons like we do just at opposite times of us.

SNACK

Set up a tray of different fruits and some animal crackers for the kids to taste and tell me what makes them all different and how good eating fruit is for us.  Of course I had to include goldfish crackers since its one of the kids favorite snack.

The teacher's manual suggested to bake 12 brownies, but of course we ended up baking a lot more than that.  Who doesn't love brownies.  \

POEMS

SEASONS OF THE YEAR
(to the tune of "Here we go round the mulberry bush")
     By: Meish Goldish

Here we go round the year again,
The year again, the year again.
Here we go round the year again,
To greet the different seasons.

Wintertime is time for snow.
To the south, the birds will go.
It's too cold for plants to grow
Because it is the winter.

In the springtime, days grow warm.
On the plants, the new buds form.
Bees and bugs come out to swarm
Because it is the spring.

In summertime, the days are hot.
Ice cold drinks, I drink a lot!
At the beach, I've got a spot.
Because it is autumn.

Fall is here, the air is cool.
Days are short, it's back to school.
Raking leaves is now the rule
Because it is autumn.

Here we go round the year again,
The year again, the year again.
Here we go round the year again,
To greet the different seasons.
