Thanksgiving Unit

For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer.
~1 Timothy 4:4-5~

Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever.
~1 Chronicles 16:34~

Enter his gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise; give thanks to Him and praise His name.
~Psalm 100:4~

After reading several verses from the Bible we read "My First Thanksgiving by Tomie dePaola".

We made a Thanksgiving Bracelet to help her remember how it all began.  Got the story from Dr. Jean and Friends Blog.

THANKSGIVING BRACELET

With this bracelet you know the First Thanksgiving that was long, long ago.  (use pipe cleaner to form a bracelet)

The Pilgrims set sail from far away on the Mayflower with tall white sails.  (insert white bead)

They sailed many days across the ocean blue.  (insert blue bead)

The seas were rough, but the ship came through.  At last they spotted land so green.  (insert green bead)

The first year was so hard and black.  (insert black bead)

Many died and wished that they could go back.  But the Nature Americans gave them a hand.  And helped them survive in the strange new land.  They decided to celebrate in a special way.  And that became the First Thanksgiving Day.

They prepared a fest with turkeys brown.  (insert brown bead)

And red cranberries that they had found.  (insert red bead)

Yellow corn that they learned to grow.  (insert yellow bead)

And orange pumpkin pies.  (insert orange bead)

But before they ate the turkey and dressings they all held hands for a thankful blessing.  (Twist the end of the pip cleaner to make a bracelet)

Cut out different shapes for Kanani to make a turkey puppet.  On the feathers I asked her to tell me 5 things she was thankful.  After I wrote them on the feather she glued them to the bag.  She had lots of fun with her turkey puppet.

Bought this turkey at Dollar Tree, she loved putting it together.  It came out cuter than I thought.

Here is another Thanksgiving craft I bought at Dollar Tree.

She wanted the turkey's feather to be all blue, once it was dry she glued the scripture Psalm 107:1.  Saw this idea on Happy Home Fairy Page.

Kanani always enjoys coloring coffee filters and then spraying them with water to watch the colors run together.  This time we made a turkey and use the coffee filter as the turkey's feather.

We always enjoy doing crafts especially for special occasions.  It has been fun listening to some of the things Kanani is thankful for this year.  Love it when she says I'm thankful for everything.

I'm definitely thankful for my salvation, family, being a mom, friends, having this wonderful opportunity to be able to homeschool.  It has been a great experience so far and a true blessing.

I thank God everyday for everything He has blessed my family and me with.

My Father's World: Unit 16 Penguin

MFW: Unit 16 Penguin

I SHOW LOVE TO EVERYONE, ESPECIALLY MY FAMILY.

Some of the treasures we found for the letter Pp.

BOOKS

Great books we read for our penguin unit.

WORKSHEETS

Working on her handwriting, writing in the missing letter from the alphabet, and some cursive.

Doing her cuisenaire rods worksheets, identifying the pictures that start with the letter Pp, and her cut and paste worksheet.

Finished her reading, writing, and drawing worksheets.

MATH

Continuing on working on her adding, subtracting, and identifying the numbers by 10s.

Comparing her height and weight to Emperor penguins.

In the beginning of this year, before we ordered our MFW curriculum we had done a lesson on penguins, of course this time around we went more in depth.  At the time I made different types of penguin shapes.  This was a great review for her.  I was so glad she was able to identify all the shapes with no help.

ARTS & CRAFT

Cut out the penguin body, feet, and beak.  Kanani then glued cotton balls, which she pulled apart, to form the penguin's body and face.  She picked out the pink eyes, because her penguin was girl and it's her favorite color.  Then she glued the memory versus on the penguin's wing.  Saw this idea on Glued to my Crafts Blog.

Made an oval shape for the penguin's body and cut out some feet and a beak for Kanani to glue together.  Got this idea from Crafts Unleashed Blog, she used felt but I like the foam sheets best.

Found these cute penguin shape foam from Target in their Dollar section.  Went great for this unit.  Let Kanani decorate them however she wanted.  She did a great job.

ACTIVITIES/GAMES

Made a penguin and glued it to a shoe box with an opening in the mouth.  Cut some fish shapes and wrote numbers by 10s from 10-100. I would call out a number and she would identify it and feed it to the penguin.  Even little man enjoyed feeding the penguin.  Great for number and color recognition.  Got this cute idea from
Rainy Day Mum.

Put together a sensory bin with some play snow which I made with 2 cups of baking soda and 1/2 cup of cheap conditioner.  Added some snowflakes to resemble ice blocks or icebergs, some blue pebbles to represent water, and some penguins.  Each penguin has a number from 0-10, which she put in order without being told.  Like any activity where she can learn in different ways.

SCIENCE

Learned that there are 15 different types of penguins and most live south of the equator.

Identified the penguins body parts.

Saw the different stages of penguins and their life cycle.

GEOGRAPHY

Looked on the map to identify where most penguins live.  They live south of the equator, where it's colder, and in the Antarctica.

MOVIES/VIDEOS

Here are some of our cute and wonderful movies we own, penguins are so great.

Great documentary on Emperor penguins, we really learned a lot from this video.

The kids watched Octonauts and the Adelie Penguins, learned they live in the coldest part of the Earth the Antarctica.  Such cute little penguins.  This is from season 2 episode 2, they also have another one called the Penguin Race that's season 1 episode 51.

MEMORY VERSUS

Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.

POEM

PENGUINS
     By: Author Unknown

Their suits are black and their vests are white.
They waddle to the left and they waddle to the right.

They stand on the ice and they look very neat,
As they waddle along on their little flat feet.

CLASSICAL MUSIC

Waldteufel: The Skaters (Waltz)

Penguins have always reminded me of men in suits.  They always look like they are ready for an elegant party or get together.  One thing I love about them is how they stay with the same mate for the rest of their lives.  So many great qualities: family oriented, help each other out, it takes a village, and they always stick together.

Hope you enjoy our penguin unit.

GOD BLESS!

My Father's World: Unit 15 Elephant

MFW: Unit 15 Elephant

I WILL REMEMBER WHAT GOD HAS DONE FOR ME.

Our letter Ee treasures

Looking over the treasures she helped find and explaining each item.

BOOKS

Some of the wonderful books we read for our elephant unit.

Such a great book with a wonderful lesson for everyone of all ages.  Teaching us to not only just give advice to our friends to help our friends.  Sometimes giving advice is not the only thing our friends need.

Some more wonderful books we read for this unit.

WORKSHEETS

Working on her handwriting and tracing lines.

Writing the missing letter for each word and then working on her word search.

Working on some more writing, identifying pictures that start with the letter Ee, reading, and connecting the dots (1-30).

Finished her worksheets of reading, drawing, story, and her blend ladder.

MATH

Forming 314 with her Math U See manipulatives.

Placing the 10s in the correct order and then identifying the numbers.

Putting the popsicle sticks in order, we use these for our 100 count.  Add a new number each day.  Today we were working on numbers 1-20.

Working on recognizing the numbers by 10s.

She was very excited to complete her Math U See worksheet without any help and correctly.  We had actually done this lesson last week, but I felt that she didn't understand or grasp it last week so we are redoing it again this week.  I'm so proud that she finally understands it.  The other picture she is working on numbers 21-40.

ARTS AND CRAFT

Once we were done with the movie we made our own Noah's Ark.

I drew a picture of an elephant for Kanani to decorate however she wanted.  She decided all she wanted to do was color it 3 different colors: blue, pink, and silver.  Such a beautiful colorful elephant.

After reading the story "Elmer by David McKee" the kids colored in their little Elmer elephant, and then asked them what makes them one of a kind.  Got this cute idea from Tunstalltimes Blog.

When we finished the story of "Horton hears a Who! by Dr. Seuss" we made our own Horton handprint with the quote "A person's a person no matter how small!".

She really enjoyed her elephant puppet and elephant mask she made.

We finished the unit talking about the best love in the world, Jesus dying on the cross for our sins.

John 3:16

For God so loved the world, that whosoever believeth in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life.

She finished doing this beautiful sun catcher.  Can't wait to put it on the window and see the sun shine through it.

ACTIVITIES/GAMES

Placed 4 of our grow capsules in water hoping to get an elephant, Kanani guessed which one it would be and she was correct.

Reviewed all of our memory versus using our unit puppets.  Out of 15 she got 13 correctly, she has worked so hard to try to memorize each one.  So proud of all her hard work, she's really enjoying these puppets.

Working on her elephant puzzle.

Discussed the story about Noah's Ark.  It's always a great to review what we have learned before.  Love how she remembers all the details of this wonderful story of the bible.

Kanani then started to work on her puzzle of Noah's Ark after she was done with her craft.

Enjoyed a great game of animal dominoes.

SCIENCE

Identifying some of the elephant's body parts.

MOVIES/VIDEOS

After reading and discussing the story of Noah's Ark we watched the wonderful movie of "Veggie Tales Noah's Ark".

Trust God and he's plan, because when God says he'll do something he'll do it.  For God knows what's best.

Psalm 33:4

For the word of the Lord is right and true; He is faithful in all he does.

Can't finish elephant unit without watching the Disney movie "Dumbo", such a heart warming movie.

MEMORY VERSUS

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

POEM

AT THE ZOO
     By: A.A. Milne

There are lions and roaring tigers, and enormous camels and things,
There are buffalo, buffalo, bisons, and a great big bear with wings.
There's a sort of tiny potamus, and a tiny nosserus too.
But I gave buns to the elephant when I went down to the zoo!

There are badgers and bidgers and bodgers, and a Superintendent's house,
There are masses of goats, and a polar, and different kinds of mouse.
And I think there's a sort of something which is call a wallaboo-O.
But I gave buns to the elephant when I went down to the zoo!

If you try to talk to the bison, he never quite understands.
You can't shake hands with a mingo-he doesn't like shaking hands.
And lions and roaring tigers hate saying. How do you do?
But I gave buns to the elephant when I go down to the zoo!

CLASSICAL MUSIC

Bach: Brandenburg Concerto no. 4 in G Minor (II. Andante)

Elephants are such magnificent animals.  They are gentle giants of the world.  Love everything about them, one of Kanani's favorite animals and my beautiful grandmother's.  My grandmother believes if you face the elephant backward (their face facing the wall) it will bring good luck.  She collects them and has them all facing the wall.

Hope you enjoy our elephant unit.

GOD BLESS!!
