MFW: RTR AND LEARNING GOD'S STORY WEEK 8
This week we will learn all about our sense of touch (skin), water cycle, and books of the Bible. Also learn about Jesus escaping to Egypt, Death of Herod, Jesus returning to Egypt, Germanic Tribes, Roman Army, Pater Patriae, December 25 Year 1, Tiberius, and the Passover. Work more on adding and subtracting with D, lots of handwriting practice, discuss authors of the Bible and the water cycle experiments. K will continue to work on adding, subtracting, and multiplying decimals. We are in for a busy week of learning and fun.

LANGUAGE ARTS
She's always so silly, Latin word this week is PATER, PATRIS (father).
Working on antonyms, adjectives, and adverbs.
Learned about conjunctions, coordinate conjunctions, correlative conjunctions, and subordinate conjunctions. Also worked on grouping together words with opposite meanings.
Searching for the opposite of certain words, using a dictionary to learn the meaning of interjection words, and then writing a sentence for those words.
Identified different types of conjunctions and work on more antonyms.
Reviewing long i, completed his little booklet, and learning the long u.
Working on the long u and handwriting practice.
Handwriting his memory verse, reading his book, and reviewing some of his spelling words. He really enjoyed answering the yes and no sentences, he wanted me to make up more.
MATH
100 chart (29-32), number of the day, weather, and calendar chart.
Word problems for subtracting, adding, and multiplying decimals.
Turning fractions to decimals and dividing decimals.
Lots of adding, subtracting, and working on +8.
Made another 10 bean stick, counted all the beans (1-30), then we practiced counting by 2s and 10s.
More addition worksheets and learning about +10.
D picked out what he wanted his restaurant to have for our lunch. I wrote the menu down for him and the prices he wanted for each one. He loved giving everyone their bill after they finished their lunch. D did such an amazing job in adding each bill, I think he enjoyed it a little too much....lol.

HISTORY
Colored in her worksheet while I read about the Roman soldiers.
Observed pictures of the Roman Army to get a better idea of their clothing, formation, weapons, and they way they lived.
Kids liked looking through the pictures and pointing out what they learned about the Roman Army.
Talked about Synagogue School and how on the first day of school the teachers would place before each student a bowl of honey. Honey was something you would only get on special occasions. It was to help the students connect the sweet taste of honey with the Word of God. After we discussed how the Roman Soldiers would have to carry all their belongings and supplies in a pack on their back, which might have weighed as much as 90 lbs. Then we weighted several items to try to get an idea of what 90 lbs felt like, we got up to 55 lbs on our scale so we imagined that 35 lbs more would be another stack of books.
Read about the Germanic Tribes and then K completed her worksheet of their migration.
SCIENCE
The biggest organ on our body is our SKIN, we learned how our skin protects us, the layers of our skin, how it keeps us cool, and much more.
Discussed how important is it to take care of our skin. One way of doing our part is by wearing sunscreen whenever we go outside, especially on sunny days. Had the kids put some sunscreen on one of their hands and press down, good demonstration of how sunscreen can protect our skin.
Seen this experiment several times online and knew it would be perfect for our lesson on skin this week. Pepper and Soap Experiment: poured some water in a plate then added some food coloring to the water. Once the food coloring was mixed with the water I added some black pepper on top of the water. Then had the kids place their finger in soap and place it in the middle of the mixture. The black pepper quickly went to the side of the plate. Use this experiment to discuss two things: First how the black pepper is like sin in our lives and how when we ask God into our hearts (finger dipped in soap), the sin quickly goes away. Second lesson is how the black pepper can also demonstrate germs and when we wash our hands we kill and get rid of the germs.
Larry Boy our Bearded Dragon has been shedding so we took the opportunity to observe his scales under the microscope. Went great with our lesson on skin.
Placed several items in brown bags for the kids to figure out what they were only by touching the items.
Placed some Elmer's glue over the kids hands and waited for the glue to dry completely. Wanted them to get a feel how a thin layer of their skin (epidermis) would feel. In K's words "To see how a lizard felt when it would shed its skin".
Did a touch sensor experiment using several different types of balls, similar in size. They had to try to tell what type of ball it was first using their elbow and then using their hands while keeping their eyes closed.
Did an Numb Activity where the kids first rubbed their index finger back and forth 3 to 4 times and then hold a pencil and rub that finger again. When they rubbed their finger while holding the pencil it would make it feel as if under their finger was numb.
Learned more about our fingernails and hair and then observed one of my hair that was half silver half brown. Looked really neat under the microscope.
Learned about landforms and the different type of places you can find water, and the different forms water takes.
Got to see a rainbow on the wall, the light coming through the door and reflected on the wall. He was so excited to see it, but was sad there was no pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.
Made our own little water cycle to tape to the window, within a few minutes we could see the start of the cycle taking place.
Making Rain Experiment: this is one of their favorite activity to do. Poured some water in a jar (about 1/2 of the jar) then placed some shaving cream on top of the water. The kids took their water droppers and poured their own rain water (water mixed with food coloring) into their clouds (shaving cream). Once the water went through the clouds it formed rain, always a fun and exciting experiment.
Took the boiled water and poured it into a jar. Placed a bowl of ice on top of the jar to demonstrate precipitation. Once the ice melted it made rain in the jar. D thought it was so cool to see the water droplets on the side of the jar.
Made a rain gauge to see how much rain we could collect, it was strange that even though it was pouring we only collected a little bit of water. Maybe the water pressure was too strong, who knows, at least we tried. D still left it outside in case it rains again and we can collect more water.

Having fun before starting their school work in the rain, great way to get some energy out.
Made a Water Cycle wheel, which I found on Kindergarten Mom web page, loved having him try to say the steps of the cycle.
He enjoyed making his Raindrop Suncatcher.
ART
Lesson 105: Penmanship

We did freestyle Abstract Art, which he greatly enjoyed.
MUSIC/VIDEOS
This week we listened to #10 Piano Concerto in F Major, Hob. XVIII no. 3 (I. Allegro).
Watched several videos on the Water Cycle.
Watched a short clip on our "Brain Pop App" about the Water Cycle and Skin.
FIELD TRIP/EVENTS
Took the kids to get some of their favorite ice cream at Tad's Dairy Barn, since we were in the area.
CONCLUSION
Had a very busy week learning all about our sense of touch (skin), water cycle, and books of the Bible. Also learned about Jesus escaping to Egypt, Death of Herod, Jesus returning to Egypt, Germanic Tribes, Roman Army, Pater Patriae, December 25 Year 1, Tiberius, and the Passover. Worked more on adding and subtracting with D, discussed authors of the Bibles, did lots of handwriting practice, did water cycle experiments, and the best of all he opened up his very own pretend restaurant. K continued to work on adding, subtracting, and multiplying decimals. Kids loved all the experiments and activities we did together, making learning so much more fun. Unto next week to see what adventures are in store for us.
